Park City
Park City is the most convenietly located major ski town in the country. With three world class skiing areas within minutes of each other it is just 36 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport. There are 940 daily scheduled flights in and out of Salt Lake City so if your going to get away from it all at least you can get here fast. Although winter is the most popular time in Park City it truly has become a year round destination.
Park City was originally established as a Silver mining camp in the late 1860's. In 1872 George Hearst laid the foundations of the Hearst media empire by paying $27,000 for a claim that became the Ontario Silver Mine, worth $50 million. Various mines would be mined into the mid 1980's when mining stopped completely. The town has a rich history including a Red Light District that used to run up Heber Avenue into Lower Deer Valley. It wasn't until much later that people started to discover the joys of what the snow had to offer.
Although the historians date skiing in the Park City area back to 1895 it didn't really start to draw attention until the early 1900's. This year marks the 45th anniversary of skiing and snowbaording at Park City Mountain Resort. In 2002 Park City was the host of the Winter Olympics. Although Park City had been discovered by many skiiers and snowboarders alike this event put Park City on the map for the World. In January each year Park City also hosts the highly publicized Sundance Film Festival.
In August Historic Main Street hosts the Park City Arts Festival where artists from all over come to display and sell their art. No matter what season you choose to come Park City it has something for everyone.
